Calculate the percentage change between two values

The Formula

Percentage change = ((ending value - starting value) / absolute value of starting value) x 100. Using the absolute value of the starting value in the denominator means the sign of the result always correctly reflects growth (positive) or decline (negative), even if the starting value itself happens to be negative.

Worked Example: Growth

Starting value 250, ending value 310. Difference: 310 - 250 = 60. Percentage: (60 / 250) x 100 = 24%. The tool reports "Growth: +24.00%" along with the raw difference of +60.00.

Worked Example: Decline

Starting value 80, ending value 68. Difference: 68 - 80 = -12. Percentage: (-12 / 80) x 100 = -15%. This displays as "Decline: -15.00%".

Why the Starting Value Can't Be Zero

Dividing by zero is mathematically undefined, so any calculation from a starting value of zero has no meaningful percentage change - there's no baseline to measure growth against. The tool blocks this case with an explicit message rather than returning an invalid result.

What This Is Not

This calculates percentage change between two values, not percentage point difference. Going from 20% to 25% is a 5 percentage point increase, but calculated through this tool as values (20 to 25) it would show a 25% relative increase - a common source of confusion in reporting.
