Two different questions, two different formulas

This page actually solves two distinct percentage problems that people often confuse: "what percent is X of Y" and "what is X% of Y." They use different formulas and different inputs.

Find Percentage: worked example

Enter value = 25, total = 200. This section answers "25 is what percent of 200?"

Percentage = (value / total) × 100 = (25 / 200) × 100 = 12.5%

Real use: you scored 25 out of 200 points on a test — you got 12.5% correct.

Calculate Percentage Value: worked example

Enter percent = 15, base value = 200. This section answers "what is 15% of 200?"

Value = (percent / 100) × base = (15 / 100) × 200 = 30

Real use: a $200 jacket is 15% off — the discount is $30 off the original price (subtract that from 200 to get the sale price of $170; this tool gives you the discount amount, not the final price).

Why these produce different-looking numbers from similar inputs

25/200 and 15% of 200 land on different values (12.5 vs 30) because the first divides two numbers to find a ratio, while the second multiplies a ratio by a number to find a quantity — they're inverse operations, not variations of the same calculation. Mixing them up is the most common percentage mistake in everyday math.

Edge case

In the first section, entering 0 as the total triggers a "Total cannot be zero" message rather than dividing by zero — there's no valid percentage of an empty set.
