Supported Input Formats

Each of the two input boxes accepts three formats: a simple fraction like 3/4, a whole number like 5, or a mixed number like 2 1/3 (two and one-third, written with a space between the whole part and the fraction). Negative values work with a leading minus sign, as in -2 3/4.

Worked Example: Addition

Enter 2/3 in the first box, select +, and enter 3/4 in the second. Since the denominators differ, the tool finds the LCM of 3 and 4, which is 12. It converts both fractions: 2/3 = 8/12 (multiply by 4) and 3/4 = 9/12 (multiply by 3). Adding numerators: 8 + 9 = 17, giving 17/12. Since 17 is more than 12, the result displays as the mixed number 1 5/12, with a decimal equivalent of 1.4167.

Worked Example: Division

Dividing 1/2 by 3/4 flips the second fraction and multiplies instead: 1/2 x 4/3 = 4/6, which simplifies (dividing by the GCD of 2) to 2/3.

Where Simplification Happens

After every operation, the tool reduces the result using the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator - so an intermediate answer like 4/6 never appears as the final answer; it's always shown in lowest terms.

Edge Cases

A zero denominator in either input is rejected immediately. Dividing by a fraction whose numerator is zero (effectively dividing by zero) is also blocked with an alert.
