Speed Distance Time Calculator

Enter any two values to calculate the third. The calculator uses the formula: Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Why unit conversion happens behind the scenes

Speed, distance, and time can each be entered in three different units (km/h, m/s, or mph; km, m, or miles; hours, minutes, or seconds), and mixing them directly would give a meaningless answer — 60 miles divided by 2 hours in different unit systems isn't just "30." To avoid that, the calculator silently converts every input to meters and seconds first, does the division or multiplication in those base units, then converts the result back to whichever unit you asked for.

Worked example

Set the calculator to solve for Speed, enter Distance = 150 km and Time = 2.5 hours, with speed unit left on km/h. Internally: 150 km becomes 150,000 m, and 2.5 hours becomes 2.5 × 3600 = 9,000 seconds. Speed = distance ÷ time = 150,000 / 9,000 ≈ 16.6667 m/s. Converting back to km/h (× 3.6) gives 16.6667 × 3.6 = 60.00 km/h — matching the direct arithmetic of 150 km ÷ 2.5 h = 60 km/h, confirming the round-trip unit conversion didn't distort the result.

Mixed-unit example

The conversion step matters more when units don't match cleanly. Solving for Time with Speed = 55 mph and Distance = 100 miles requires converting mph to m/s (55 × 1609.34 / 3600 ≈ 24.588 m/s) and miles to meters (100 × 1609.34 = 160,934 m) before dividing: 160,934 / 24.588 ≈ 6,545.6 seconds, which the tool then converts into whatever time unit you selected — about 109.1 minutes, or 1.82 hours.

Common uses

Estimating arrival time on a road trip (solve for time), checking whether a planned pace is realistic for a race (solve for speed), or figuring out how far you'll get in a fixed window of travel time (solve for distance) are the three standard use cases this formula covers.
