Why "include end date" changes the answer

Two dates can be subtracted two different ways, and people mean different things by "how many days." If you're asking how much time elapses between January 1 and March 15 (an exclusive count, like counting nights of a hotel stay), you want the raw gap. If you're asking how many calendar days a project spans from January 1 through March 15 inclusive, you need one more day added to the end. This calculator's "Include end date" checkbox controls exactly that — checked, it shifts the end date forward by one day internally before computing the difference, so both a hotel-night count and a calendar-day-span count are available from the same two inputs.

Worked example

Start date January 1, 2026, end date March 15, 2026, with "Include end date" checked. Internally the end date becomes March 16. Counting whole years first: 0 (both in 2026). Months: March is month index 2, January is index 0, so 2 months. Days: 16 - 1 = 15 days. The breakdown reads "2 months, 15 days." The total-days figure is computed separately as the straight difference — January has 31 days, February 2026 has 28 (2026 isn't a leap year), and 15 more days into March brings the running total to 31 + 28 + 15 = 74 total days between the two dates.

How the future/past date panel differs

The lower panel doesn't compute a gap — it starts from one date and applies a fixed offset. Entering 6 months from January 1, 2026 in "add" mode returns July 1, 2026, along with the day of the week, using JavaScript's built-in date rollover (so adding 1 month to January 31 correctly lands on a valid date in the following month rather than an invalid "February 31").

Practical use

Duration mode is the more common ask: computing someone's exact age, the length of an employment period for a reference letter, or how many days remain until a deadline. The future/past panel is useful for the reverse question — "what date is 90 days from now" for a return policy, or "what date was 2 years and 3 months before this invoice."
